I rank pretty pictures
Today I'm going to be ranking what I like to call "exaggerated art-house type of movies that are full of pretty pictures but the plot is a hit or miss".
These are the kinds of movies that you rewatch because it's really pretty. Every scene is a photo from an art student's final year portfolio.
The plot of these movies are generally a hit or miss, I'll talk about the plot when I get to them.
But they're being ranked based on prettiness alone.
- Chungking Express - CH
First up is Chungking Express from the king of pretty art house movies, Wong Kar Wai. While the story of Chungking Express is pretty simple, the cinematography and direction of this movie is the reason why it's often on the Top 5 of everyone's foreign cinema list.
The movie follows two storylines of two broken hearted men. It's a fairly simple yet engaging breakup/post-breakup kind of movie. But most importantly, it's pretty.
2. Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (Btw, my favourite movie)
1/2 of the Charlie Kaufmann movies on this list. Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind is an exploration of the question "Is it better to have loved and lost, or to have never loved at all?"
But enough of the plot. The cinematography of this movie is made to be confusing. You're reliving the main characters memories as he remembers them, it's a messy and disorienting sequence. I absolutely love the transitions and some scenes are absolutely perfect. It's a good watch, but it's definitely a little confusing for a first time viewer.
3. I’m Thinking of Ending Things
Another Charlie Kaufmann pretty shapes and colours movie. I have to be honest though, I still don't get the movie. I have a very rough understanding of it but not enough to fully explain it. The movie is full of soliloquies on life, aging, loss, and loneliness.
Most importantly, it's full of pretty pictures.
4. Uncle - KR
5. Liverleaf - JP
